The £628 fee is not fixed for everyone. Under the Help with Fees scheme, if you are on a low income or certain benefits and have savings below the threshold, the fee can be reduced or waived entirely. Apply for Help with Fees before you pay, using reference form EX160 through the online service. It is the most overlooked saving in a cheap divorce.

The trap: cheap on the divorce, exposed on the finances

Almost every budget online divorce package covers only the divorce, not the money. That matters because ending the marriage does not end your financial claims on each other. Without a court-approved financial consent order, your ex can come back years later, sometimes even after remarriage, and make a claim against your income, savings, pension, or a future windfall. The famous case of Wyatt v Vince saw a claim succeed decades after the divorce because no financial order was ever made.

The one spend not to cut: the consent order

A solicitor-drafted financial consent order costs £500 to £1,500 plus VAT plus a court fee, and makes your financial agreement legally binding and final. On a cheap divorce this is the most valuable spend you can make. If you disagree on the finances, mediation is the low-cost way to reach agreement before the consent order is drafted.

Cheap divorce FAQs

What is the cheapest way to get a divorce in the UK?
Apply online yourselves through the government divorce service: the £628 court fee and nothing more. This works when you both agree and can complete the online application. If money is tight, the means-tested Help with Fees scheme can reduce or waive the court fee.
Can I get a divorce for free?
The divorce is never entirely free because of the £628 court fee, but that fee can drop to zero under Help with Fees if you are on a low income or certain benefits with limited savings. Legal advice is not free for most, though legal aid remains available in limited circumstances such as domestic abuse.
Is a cheap online divorce safe?
For the divorce itself, yes. Fixed-fee providers complete the same online application for around £150 to £400 plus the court fee, buying convenience and error-checking. The risk is the finances: the cheapest packages exclude the financial consent order, leaving your money and pensions legally unresolved.
What should I not skip to save money?
The financial consent order. Ending the marriage does not end your financial ties, and without a court-approved order either party can claim against the other years later. A solicitor-drafted consent order (£500 to £1,500 plus VAT and a court fee) is the most important spend in a low-cost divorce.
