About SolicitorCost.com
Independent UK guide to solicitor costs across every legal service. Real fee ranges from published gov.uk, SRA, and judiciary sources. Last full review: May 2026.
Why this site exists
UK consumers searching for solicitor costs typically land on a mix of Unbiased, comparemymove, MoneyHelper, and the Law Society itself. Those pages are useful starting points but tend to lack two things: a regional drilldown (London partner rates differ from a Newcastle high-street firm by a factor of 4), and worked examples that show how solicitor time and disbursements actually combine into the figure on your invoice.
SolicitorCost.com fills that gap. Every page is built around the published 2026 figures from the Civil Justice Council's Guideline Hourly Rates, the HMCTS Fees Order, the Legal Aid Agency means thresholds, and HM Land Registry fee schedules. Where private market rates differ meaningfully from those guidelines (City of London especially), we say so and cite the Law Society Fee Survey.
Who runs it
SolicitorCost.com is a Digital Signet site. Digital Signet is a one-person research and publishing operation run by Oliver Wakefield-Smith, focused on UK and US consumer cost data. Other Digital Signet sites you may have seen include StampDutyRate.com, NHSDentistCost.com, and PassportRenewalCost.com.
I am not a solicitor and this site is not a law firm. I commission no advertorial content, take no fees from any firm featured or referenced, and the site does not run affiliate links to law firms or solicitor-finder services. The only links to external services on this site point to gov.uk, the Law Society's SRA Find a Solicitor service (a free public directory), and other Digital Signet cost guides.
Editorial framework
- No funnel. No email gate, no lead form, no "get a quote" widget. You read, you leave.
- No paid placement. No firm has paid to appear here. No firm can pay to appear here.
- No affiliate links to legal services. Where we link out, it is to gov.uk, the SRA register, or a Digital Signet site on an adjacent topic.
- Inline citations. Every cost figure is traceable to its source.
- Single-source-of-truth dating. A single LAST_VERIFIED_DATE constant drives every "Updated" stamp on the site. When we re-verify, every page flips together.
Source data
The numbers on this site are drawn from these UK public sources:
- Civil Justice Council Guideline Hourly Rates 2026 (gov.uk/government/publications/solicitors-guideline-hourly-rates) for all hourly-rate figures.
- HMCTS Fees Order 2008 and subsequent amendments (gov.uk/court-fees-what-they-are) for court fees.
- Legal Aid Agency means thresholds (gov.uk/check-legal-aid) for legal-aid eligibility figures.
- HM Land Registry fee schedule (gov.uk/government/publications/registration-services-fees) for conveyancing disbursements.
- Office of the Public Guardian fees (gov.uk/power-of-attorney/register) for LPA registration.
- HMRC SDLT rates (gov.uk/stamp-duty-land-tax/residential-property-rates) for conveyancing tax calculations.
- Law Society Fee Survey (lawsociety.org.uk) for private-market context above the GHR figures.
- SRA Find a Solicitor (solicitors.lawsociety.org.uk) for the public solicitor register.

Not legal advice
Nothing on this site is legal advice. The figures are indicative cost ranges drawn from public data. They are not a substitute for a written quote from a regulated solicitor, and they are not a substitute for legal advice on your specific situation. If you need legal advice, instruct a solicitor registered with the SRA (or the Law Society of Scotland / Northern Ireland) or use one of the free services listed in our cheap solicitor guide.
